Default Fuel gauge/float broken?

So basically something to do with measuring the amount of fuel I currently have, is not really working accurately.

Had the light turn on earlier that I needed some juice put in, but I figured meh I'm going out later so I won't bother now. Fast forward a few hours, after 5 mins of level driving the fuel light turns off, weird? Fast forward another few hours and it comes back on after going home once again, so I chuck £20 in for now and apparently I've got just above half a tanks full?

Just wondering if anyone's had any issues like this, and whether or not you've got any advice? Off to a garage tomorrow to get two new tires fitted and my tracking done, is there anything I could possibly ask the mechanics to have a peek at for me?

Could be a bad earth... All it is piece of metal on the end of a float arm, touching the other part of metal giving you a reading.
Doesnt take 5 minutes to whip out the fuel pump. If you want them to look at it, make it easier onyourself , whip out the rear seats.
