you are best off looking for which model is most suited to you etc, maybe go into somewhere like jessops so you can have a play. then when you know what model you want have a look on here http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk and it will show you what the cheapest price is and where to buy it.

Ive used 3 versions of the "Sony DSC-W" series cameras.
The cybershot ones that come with the carl zeiss lenses. My missus is rocking the W140 which is fairly old now. But gives you very sharp and deep coloured images.
The W290 seems to be the most recent release:

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/...6499/Show.html
is £189 if you use discount code WINTER10 (which is only £2 more expensive than the cheapest store on cameraprice buster but as jessops are well known its worth £2 for piece of mind)
silver version

FujiFilm Finepix's are brilliant because they are classed as bridge cameras.
Before going to a DSLR, I used to shoot with a FinePix S5800 and got great images out of it. It has functions like a point and shoot but also modes you see on a DSLR such as Manual, Shutter and aperture priority.
It's more of a button based camera rather than a dial so you'll have to prepare your shots earlier if you were to shoot subjects that require you to adjust settings quickly!
Edit: If you go on page 4 of my flickr page, the shots there are all from my old finepix

You can get good pics on those bridge cameras but like i said it depends what you are after

G10/11 to expencive i guess.
if you want compact, ixus.
if you still want some settings to play with and full manual mode then the Fuji bridges are great. i got my dad a second hand S5800 for £50 of ebay.
