Your surround sounds doesn't look like it has optical or HDMI in so you would need to do:
HDMI to TV
Phono (Red and White) from the out on the TV to the IN on the surround sound box
If your TV doesn't have Phono (red and white) out (most do), you would need to use the other cable that came with the PS3 to split the Video and Audio so you could have Video to TV and Audio to Surround Sound
You won't get TRUE 5.1 with Phono though unfortunately as it doesnt support it
Hope that makes sense

Yeah HDMI cable between PS3 and TV.
HDMI carried both video and audio to the TV
Then get a phono cable (red and white) between TV (audio out) and Surround Sound (audio in) to carry the Audio from the TV to the SS
Job done
Samsung TV, looks the same as mine and I do exactly why I have said above and works great

I guess you just get 2.0 through the TV speakers at the moment?
You will definitely notice a big improvement, you will get 5.1 in a sense of 5 normal speakers and 1 subwoofer but true 5.1 is slightly different.
Give it a go mate, it will be a big improvement over TV speakers

Would the DVD be played using the Surround Sound unit or the PS3?

You could buy a new unit but the 'Home Cinema' systems you get from Currys/Comet etc come with speakers already so would be a new system effectively.
If you are thinking of upgrading, I would get an AV reciever such as the ones from Richer sounds below:
http://www.richersounds.com/products...s/av-receivers
You could use your existing speakers with an AV Reciever and it would replace the unit itself.
Would be a decent step up from the Home Cinema system
They don't provide DVD playback but your PS3 does that anyway

get a real AV receiver with digital inputs if you want true multichannel surround sound. Yamaha and Onkyo do some decent ones at very affordable prices.
