the first question is what you hope to gain?
then maybe someone will be able to help?

asked my bro for you:
unless you have two phone lines that won't work.
the adsl filter thingies you will have connected between your phones/etc and your phone lines effectively split the phone line in half. one half for internet and the other for phonecalls.
the home hub effectively connects to the internet by making a special phonecall on the internet half of the phone line.
connecting the other in and trying to get the internet is like picking another phone up and trying to make a phonecall when someone else is already on the phone.
it just doesnt work like that.
if the hub is wireless enabled, i advise using the wireless connection to the internet that it will provide.

i'll second what has been said above.
If you want to get your PC upstairs connected via cable direct then your options are limited. Basically you'd have to run a network cable (patch lead) down to where the router (your main home hub) is and go from there.
It really depends on what you use the internet for... if its only for web browsing and the occasional download / bit of gaming then its best to go wireless to save a lot of hassle.. If you area a hardcore downloader (which is doubtful considering you're with BT for your internet) then cable...

Quoted for truth!
You *could* get these plugs that go into the electric sockets, and allow you to effectively use them as network cables for example;
bthub1 > patch cable > special electric plug > special electric plug > patch cable > bthub2.

Good old networking.
As stated if you wanted a second router you would have to connect it to your first router. Wireless is your best option. If not ull have to run a cable from the router downstairs , upstairs! The reason its not working is because the MODEM would be connected downstairs to your first router, without a link to this you arn't going to get an internet connection upstairs.
Hope that made sense.

As darly said you can only do that if running a RJ45 9standard network cable) from downstairs to upstairs and this technically is still going through the same thing so nothing actual changed
but homehubs are not that amazing eprsonally, but they do seem to have a good rang on the so not sure why you would need to as you should have a high signal upstairs if your hub is only downstairs
if you are going to run a hug cbale then you may aswell run it straight from the PC to the 1 home hub!

you can do it but you dont spilt the telephone lead.
You daisy chain the routers together with ethernet. Allow DHCP passthrough on Router number 2 or tell it what its address is i.e. ip address of router number 1. It can be done i've done it. Not sure why you want to as both routers are the same and its an extra hop.
E.g.

Thats how i'd set it up if there was more than one PC that needed connecting via cable upstairs....
I've got the internet coning into my room direct and it then goes wireless from there, everything in my room is connected via patch. I used to have servers up in the loft and they all connected into an ethernet switch and then to my main switch/router in my room.
There is one thing with wireless though. If the wireless home hub is downstairs and there is more than two floors in the house then you may have blackspots the further away you are from the hub. If the hub was at the top then these black spots are reduced. Its all to do with radio wave patterns and the output "cone"
So to me the network would be upside down.... (and before you say turn the aerial upside down, i tried this theory at college and for some reason it made little or no difference)

cheers guys, my head is gonna explode with all this info! lol. the reason i wanna do this is cos i got a pc hardwired downstairs and also a ps3 (so both ethernet ports are taken) i connect my laptop upstairs using the wireless which isnt that bad, but i also wanna connect an xbox 360 upstairs and would prefer to hardwire it instead of wireless because ive heard its not that stable? (and also im a tight arse and dont wanna fork out £60 for a wireless adapter!) and i wanna see if theres a way of making use of the other hub. cheers

You can hard wire it and also use it wireless a bt home hub supports upto 10 users on it so you can hard wire it with a ethernet cable and use the other one wireless no need for two routers

The diagram shows there is no point as the 2 routers have to be connected with RJ45 so you havnt gained anything. The only reason your would use that network topology is if you wanted 8 computers connected and not 4 (4 ports per router)
