On the bulkhead at the rear of the engine bay. Left hand side as you look at it. Its the black box with a thin hose running to it. At least thats where is is on a MK1 VTS

It's on the front, left hand side of the inlet manifold. Has what looks like an 8mm bolt holding it on and a plug leading to it.

Nope. Not even close.
It looks like these: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_t...All-Categories
It will be bolted to a round black cylinder attached to the top of the inlet manifold. Top left-hand side of the engine bay on a 52 VTR.

Ahhhhh, perhaps you should have asked that first!
There's alot of other stuff that could cause this before the map sensor would be a likely candidate.
Check these:
1) Idle control valve: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=174710
2) Coolant temp sensor: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=195050

MAP sensor, ICV or coolant temp sensor.
MAP sensor would be my first port of call. I've circled it here for you. Unclip the connector, remove the 8mm bolt and pull it out. Give it a spray/ wipe over with WD40.
