Default pondering this years brake setup......

last summer i ran with brembos and im considering downsizing my brakes for this year.
i didnt make it to the track as much as id hoped with work and money the usual excuses really and as i drive the track car when its nice to work and around and about the brembos are shockingly bad, i just cant get any real heat into them on the road to a decent operating temp.
SO,
do i fit my gti6 setup, same disk size albeit narrower disks with half decent pads,
or go back to my favoured 266's ??
ive never ran the single piston 283s on the road so what are they like for a bit of abuse but mainly a tootle around the lanes, will i struggle to get them up to a safe temp on a sedate run into work?
with the brembos you can feel the braking increase and decrease through a drive as the temps fluctuate.

i guess ive answered my own question really but could do with some input. the car dont weigh alot circa 750kg and as much as we all think we are the BOSS drivers the road hardly allows for much,

the 266s use decent ferodo pads and i suppose il have the option to go back to 14's aswell.
they look pretty poop compared to the brembos........

your issue is nothing to do with brembo's vs single piston brakes, its due to compound of the pad your running...

the brembos are running factory pads, they are great when up at a decent temp but cooling very quickly which is ideal when abusing the car. but not good as a daily.
any ideas on a better pad to contemplate?

the pad size on the brembos and the 283 single piston surface area is roughly the same, there for if enything the brembos will put more heat in due to 4 pistons.

what "factory" pad are you using?

it wasnt as a comparison between caliper type as such. the pads are the pagids the 407 coupe come with. dont appear a very harsh compound particularly. the disks are the gti180 ones but just cant keep them hot.
il likely run the 266s again as a good compromise, if like last year il probly only hit the track a handfull of times

My brembos run oe pads, never had any issues like your mentioning, if anything on my car before the turbo they were serious over kill

Now the pads are gettin on a bit I'd like to uprate

I agree with mark it's your disc/ pad combo giving you trouble tbh

But having said that... The 266 set up that was on my berlingo was unreal... So that on a Saxo would defo be capable

If using the right discs and pads

Why have 4 pots if youre not going to put worthy pads in?

kinda takes away the point of having fancy brakes...

The disc size will have a greater effect on heat capacity than the pad size

this is my train of though, the gti180 disks are massivly wide too,so i guess they are somewhat overkill, but ultimately performing very well but just not in a heat range thats useable for me and my car i guess?

ashleyp. got a suggestion as to a better pad to suit road use?

realistically the brakes arnt matched to the car and its use particularly well. ideally something like the smaller hispec calipers with disks 250-260mm would likely be a good compromise.

The gti180 disks rally shouldn't be over cooling the brake system all that much. As they wont have much more specific heat capacity that any other similar sized disc. Try getting a fresh set of pads fitted and deglazed, and see if it improves.

Not totally.

'better' pads don't often work so well from cold, lower speck pads do which is better for a road car.

The 4 pots still give you good braking.

as four pots are fitted to many road cars im also leaning towards a pad change first.

this tbh..4 pots with OE spec pads are absolutley mental on a saxo..put track spec pads on standard saxo brakes they wouldnt even come close...and wouldnt drive right when cold

i knew the turbo wasnt going on for a while when i fitted the brembos..so i knew the pads would be near shagged by the time it went on (and they are)

now id like to uprate them as the extra braking could come in handy now lol..but before its was way more then needed
