Gearbox oil leak
Hi all, I have a friend with a 16v, we have a problem with the gearbox emptying itself of oil
What happened was he was driving, went to pull out a junction and lost drive intermintantly, then he could smell the oil burning on the exhaust.
He got out of the car to a puddle of oil. The gearbox seems to be leaking between the bell housing and the engine casing, but the clutch still engages and bites fine, as do the gears (all be them a bit dry!)
My first thought was perhaps the diff had collapsed and knackered the seals, or could the seals just collapse and empty the box of oil?
I had a look over the car the other day and we put around 500ml of oil back in it to see where it was leaking from, and within an hour or so it was back out on the floor, like I say it seems to be coming from around the diff/back of the box where it joins the engine.
Any tips?
I have another earbox I will be fitting unless its a common fault on those seals.
Infact are the seals re usable? IE Could I take them from the other box to test if they are at fault?
Dan

Sounsd like box casing is cracked either inside the bell housing or somewhere else and its running down. Driveshaft seals would be obvious really, as you'd see them leaking - new ones are cheap, I wouldnt re-use old ones.
However are you sure its gearbox oil? Could be leaking from the flywheel bolts if no thread lock has been used.

As above, if its not gearbox oil it could also be the rear crank seal behind the flywheel, Or a failed input shaft seal but that would be rare.

Its definitly gearbox oil that has been leaking. Driveshaft oil seals didn't show any oil to be honest, so I'll go ahead and get the other box on!

Yeah if its throwing it out and it isnt driveshaft seals then it wouldnt be worth repairing when you look at the price of a replacement box tbh

Might be crank shaft seal. Mine leaked but it wasn't a big leak like this sounds just a few drips per day.

Gearbox oil leak
Dear Danny VTS.
If your car is leaking gearbox oil, then it definately won,t be be leaking
from any part of the engine, as that is a totally different oil ( that would be
engine oil ). Gearbox oil has a totally different smell too it than engine oil.
For the problem you have on your car, there is only 2 options as to what
is leaking ;-
1/ Failure of the first motion shaft " oil seal ". This is the oil seal which slides
over the first motion shaft ( which is the same shaft that has the clutch
locating splines on )
On some cars, but I am not too sure whether they are fitted to the saxo
or not.
2/ The gearbox can sometimes have a small alloy housing, inside the bell-
housing, which the first motion shaft oil seal sits in. This housing can usually
has a small paper gasket, which it could be this gasket that is leaking gear-
box oil
I hope this helps Danny I am at home all day everyday if you need any-
more info Danny but in the summer it is usually the evening before I get onto
the forums.
All The Best.
Vince.

Now what do people do with regard to 1.1 gearboxes?
I've got the gearbox on, but cant get the GTI driveshaft in on the nearside (the shorter shaft)
I have the 1.1 shaft too but that's obviously a bit thinner and slightly smaller by a few mm so I can't get the hub nut on!

yes, looks like the diff or diff bearing has shat itself, cracking the casing open, new box time.

lol no shit
I have a box in there mate, but the 16v shafts only fit on the offside, it wont go in on the nearside because the bit of metal after the splines is thicker on a 16v
and I cant use the 1.1 shafts as they are just too short
so what do people use when putting 1.1 boxes on 16v?
