erm no its vastly different.
Boe have a look at the premium how to guides on changing the gear box oil, tells you all you need to know.
Engine and gearbox oil never come in contact.

really easy to do, even a garage should charge much to check and top up if necessary. THe only thing you need is the square key bit (same us sump nut key).
Basically a case of jack up car remove wheel, remove arch liner, unscrew top plug and top up if necessary.

your supposed to change it every few years aint you? iv had it about 2 and half years and iv done roughly 30,000 miles in it but iv never checked it and the garage who did the linkage - well they were pretty naff, i only went in for the clutch and they broke the linkage!! (not my usual garage)
what il prob do then is go to the bloke who lives nr me - hel do anything for 4 cans of lager (hes an alcholic lol)

Its all there in the how-to guide Boe... its dead simple, but not something I can see you having a go at, if im honest.
If your gearbox isnt making a whirring noise, then Id leave it... the gearbox oil cant escape, unlss you have a leaky seal.
Engine oil needs topping up etc more regualrly as it can be burnt in the engine and therefore disappears.
