Buy a new car or refresh your current car?
Now this is obviously an option that has been around for ever for ever ever. Its so simple but not a lot of people even think about it.
So you have your current car which you have had for 2 years and you want to sell it for £3k and buy something for £6k. The £6k car may only be as comfortable and as quick and handle as well as your current car. However, you also have the option of spending £3k on your current car, this could refresh your whole chassis and rebuild your engine, and possibly turbo it maybe a clean new interior. This would in effect give you a new car, new handling characteristics and new power delivery as well as a fresh cockpit to be in.
So which would you rather do? For me personally, I would rather spend the £3k on my current car than put it with whatever I could sell my car for to get a new car.
Depending on what car you have for £3k you could make an absolute beast.

guess it depends how much you love your car i adore mine and i would defo spend 3k on fixing her up and making her sound. but there are alot of nice cars out there atm that would be just as great, but if youve had your car for 2 years im asuming you know it almost inside and out .. id stick with spending the 3k

Go new,
3k of mods is great, but when you come to sell it you will lose out big time.

£3k won't get you far if you want to change engine/drivetrain layout.

An older/classic/2nd car spending 3k on a makeover could make a lot of sense, but only if you are planning to keep the car!
Proper mini
Classic gti (Golf mk1/2 or 205)
Nova
Astra Gte
etc

Depends what you want from the car, if you want a drift car what's the point of spending the money on your saxo.
Also you can spend all the money in the world but at the end of the day its still a French shitbox. Sure you might have the most powerful saxo in the world but if it where me id still look at it and think, could of had a evo for that money.
ALSO you can spend all that money and the car will be so hardcore it won't be un anymore, just too uncomfortable and powerful to be driven anywhere but a track.
There's loads of cars out there, I want to sample as many as possible not be stuck with one cause I've poured my life savings into it.

With something rare or that I knew I wanted to keep forever I'd stick with the current one. Otherwise I'd always move on.
End of the day, in a year, the 6k car will be worth 5.5k maybe, the 3k car with 3k thrown at it will be worth probably 2.5k. It's a lot of money to loose so unless it was staying forever I'd swap cars. It's always nice to try a different car anyway, I'd swap every 3 months if I could be bothered to.
I plan on keeping my bike forever now, so that will happily have anything it needs but I still won't blow 2k on carbon wheels or anything. But I'll spend £700 on an engine rebuild if that's what it needs.

This. Bloody love the look of those cars, but all the ones I see up here still command like 13-15k.
I have a situation coming up where I will be in the position of the OP. Got hit by a lorry on my way to work and it knackered my shoulder and put me off work for 8 weeks. Not sure on how much compo Ill get and when but the other party have admitted liability so I guess its just a matter of time.
So do I sexy up the vts or ditch it and get something younger......
(Kinda getting a real semi for astra vxr or gtc.. wish I knew how much I was getting /sigh )

Go new.
Really don't see the point in spending ££££ on a old car, unless its something mega rare, and mega special.

I wouldn't spend 3K on a saxo, I personally don't love mine that much. I've had less powerful cars which I've loved more. Change is good.
