Taxing a newly insured car online
Hi guys, have any of you bought an untaxed car, insured it then taxed it online. Is it possible to do immediately? Or does it take time for it to update the insurance for you to tax it?
Whats the soonest you have taxed a car after insuring it?

Ouch, the other thing is insuring the car and printing off the certificate to present at a post office, but do they not want the legit piece they send in the post to tax?
Whats the other ways to get it taxed. The car is near enough 4 hours away so it aint something I can view then insure and go back another day to collect fully taxed and insured.

Yeah as said you have to wait until the system updates. It's a bit of a ballache but sometimes it can take up to week or even longer! I would take a trip to the postie when it's open

If you go and view the car and ultimately want to drive it away there and then, then producing a print off of the insurance, mot cert, and logbook or green slip in the post office will be fine, i've done it loads

Not sure how it works with the post office, I've only ever done it online.
My car's are always SORN over winter, then back in the summer I can insure and MOT the same day, but still gotta wait till the next day or two before the tax website gets insurance details updated. Same kinda situation I guess.
I know it's a bit lame being far away, but go see it, put a deposit down and then go back?
or, risk it lol. (I've done it a couple of times, shitting bricks all the way home, even worse when it's 4 hours back for you lol)
edit: or do as chris says above

You 100% used the print off certificate out of the email confirmation? I hope they have a few post offices around there to do the rounds to tax it if one doesnt accept it lol

haha I really don't want to risk it, the entire journey is on the M1 so I will no doubt see one or two traffic cars.
I haven't really got the option of going back another day either. Its impossible for me to get time off work at the moment, so im having to set off at 4am, drive home after getting the car then go to work at 2pm until 10pm. I dont really want to do this twice lol
Im actually considering insuring it right now if I cant get hold of some trade plates.

Just found this from the KwikFit insurance FAQ site. But Im not sure if the question is answered by one of their dodgey apprentices
:
Can I tax my car with the copy of the certificate?
The copy of the certificate should be adequate, as long as you have a good quality printer. Do you know that you can also tax your car without going to the Post Office? If you telephone the number on your SORN or go online, you can arrange your tax in a couple of minutes because the DVLA database will recognise if your car has a valid MOT and insurance. (Unless you have just insured the vehicle and need to tax it immediately, as there will be a short period of time while the DVLA’s database is updated).

I've 100% used a printed certificate before. Just think, most companies don't send out a certificate nowadays down to paper waste. Most are just emailed through.

As long as you've printed the actual certificate of insurance and not just the cover summary you'll be fine. The print copy is the same as the one you can print, or it is with Admiral anyway.

This.
Definitely 110%. Insured a new car about 2 months ago and they don't send a paper copy through. Can access it online and print it.

Some post offices are funny
I've done it before but I've also been knocked back with the print off,
If its a quality print out it should be fine though, I'd used faxed items and the quality wasn't great so got knocked back on the grounds "it looks like it could be fake"

Yeah i've 100% done it with a print out about 4 times no questions asked. As said just make sure it's the actual print out for your policy not just some generic info about the insurance compnay!

We use 7 day insurance at work when we sell a car.
Every policy gets emailed to us and we print it and use at either the dvla or post office
