Default Puma now for sale

Okay so the title will change, but the project goal is still the same

Clean it
Strip everything out and make it light as possible
Bucket seats (still got these from my clio)
Decent brakes and tyres
sort the rust out
service
sort the paint out / wrap it / dip it.. generally tart her up
enjoy her til she dies!

The goal is to build her in to a road legal track hack I can use now and again for a bit of fun on the lowest budget possible!

On to the car!

The car:

X (2000) Reg puma 1.7 16v
114k miles
Tax runs out this month (£120 6 months)
MOT til October!
full stamped history and loads of receipts for work done
Engine pulls strong and the gearbox feels tight
when she left the factory she was red, unfortunately shes gone 50 shades of pink
the rear arches are rusted (common problem)
the sills are pretty solid and the underside doesnt look too bad

So far she owes me (will update this as we go along)

car- £280
tax- £126 (6 months)
300mm brakes- £150
speedhunters sticker - £18
T-cut and cloths - £7

soon to buy
custom seat rails
harness bar
rear strut brace
coilovers / spring and shock kit
polybushes front and rear

current pics:

The worst bits

drivers arch

the passengers door only opens from the inside.. the lock barrel is missing but still locks from the fob

under the bay

interior (all going to the tip soon)

under the boot carpet

and randomly found this rock in the boot

and there we have it.. shes rough round the edges but mechanically sound!

you can fit your head in the arch gap and the rust needs some serious attention before shes used but i plan on sorting her out on the cheapest of budget around haha

Bit of waffle/story

Some of you may know, my clio died and I bought a 1.6 petrol 307 for a daily
the only reason i went for the 307 it ticked all the boxes I had for a quick fix daily.. comfy, spacious, 4 doors, very practical, quiet, and easy to maintain! sorted

after 2 months of ownership I could bare the boredom no more.. so I decided to hunt for something to tinker with which wont cost an arm and a leg while I save up for a new daily (Blobeye WRX)

the requirements..

Cheap to buy ( <£500 )
Tax and test til the end of august
"nippy"
easy to work on
cheap parts
most important factor it has to be fun!

After looking at ropey mx5.. Getting outbid by £5 on a 1.0 k11 Micra.. and getting fed up of trawling through local ads for something to dick about with.. I posted a thread on here looking for suggestions on what to look for!..
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=464930

Special thanks to Nik_L for this:

Should get a rough, low t+t'er within budget.
The hunt was on.. Signed up to ProjectPuma and the first car on the first page of the sales threads was spot on and only 100miles away... lol

contacted the seller and was told he still had it, I told him if it was as described I will drive it away no questions asked!

Woke up 6am monday morning, got ready to go out and phoned a mate to come with me to go view it.. picked him up for 6:30 and we hit the road at 7am.. arrived at Ponty-pridd around 10:30 and eventually found the guys house.. nightmare haha

the car was perfect for what I wanted it for, a deal was done, we shook hands and proceeded to try and get phone signal to take out day insurance for my mate to drive it back.. more of a nightmare!

the front tyres were beyond bald, and the rears were on the limit (as described..) luckily I had already bought a set of 4x108 16" Team dynamic pro 1.2s for my 307 but unfortunately came with t1Rs that are too small for it, turns out they are perfect for the puma, so i brought them with me to swap over before we drove it home!

only thing is.. the wheels are et:28.. 20 less than ford fitment.. they look awesome!

Got that sorted by about 11am.. and started the drive home! did i mention it was a 2 hour drive? and i had to be home by 1:30pm at the latest to get ready for and get to work!.. i was stupidly tired but i smiled all the way home!

My mate had brought his walkie talkies along and we convoy'd home in top gear style making jokes about how much of a shed it really is!

after being stuck behind a tractor and a set of temporary traffic light / road works! we made it home by 1:35
parked it up, dropped my mate home and went to work!

and thats where we are up to so far!

Ill try to keep this updated if / when anything happens, im super excited to crack on with it

the goal is get it ready for a track day in august.. and after the event she will either be fixed up for more abuse.. sold on.. or stripped and scrapped

C+C, Thoughts and ideas welcome.. feel free to throw the abuse its all for abit of fun!

May aswell do more then 1 track day or why bother?

1 track day then scrapped seems like a waste of time, money and effort lol

Ive seen worse tbh! its literally just the outer arch, underneath is alright, theres a bit of a hole that needs patching but she'll do

Cheers for the comments

Good start although as it's a bangernomics track she'd seems a bit silly to spend lots on it such as brakes etc for 1 track day. What happened to the clio?

Going for a typical mondeo / st170 300mm brake kit, £120 and then sell it to another puma owner, or fiesta zs owner the standard puma brakes are shoddy at best!

Like I say if she lives through the track day that's great but I've got a feeling she won't pass the next mot so might not be viable to keep her on! We will see

Clio snapped an inlet valve, garage reckon it was 'over revved and low on oil' even tho I checked oil every 2 days without fail, and very rarely took her passed 6k!.. She's sold now and the blokes fixing her up

Bit of an update, nothing really exciting..

Stripping has begun!
got this lot out so far

and it looks a little like this

All the brackets and excess metal will be trimmed out and sound proofing removed!

still need to remove A pillars, roofliner, carpet, front seats and possibly the dash, undecided there!

and the costs of the project have risen..

300mm brakes paid for, should be here friday - £150
Tax'd the car for 6 months - £126
insured it as a second car and drove it to work today.. she goes!

the springs are corroded and the shocks are passed their best, shes crashy on bumps and knocking on all corners, so im on the look out for a "cheap" set of coilys or shock and spring kit.. which evers available on a budget!

ordered one of these stickers - £12

took a couple pics when i got to work today:

Taking her to a local garage on thursday to look at getting some seat rails fabricated for my buckets, a harness bar and a rear strut brace welded in

so yeh.. thats where im up to so far!

shes tatty but runs like a dream.. couldn't be happier for what its worth!

more to come soon, C&C welcome

Also looking for opinions...
the interior bare metal will be painted white
the rear arches are gonna have the rust chopped out and replacement arches welded and smoothed in..
do i try and save the red paint?
or go for a diy spray job?!
im leaning towards keying the whole car and spraying it with rattle-cans primer grey and adding a few track inspired graphics.. nothing ott
or do i try a different colour? shes road legal but primary track car so im not bothered about making her perfect. just presentable

i know the finished product wont be to everyones taste, its just a bit of fun to tinker with and learn as i go along.. just looking for a general input and some advice as we go along

cheers.

bit more of an update..

made some door pulls: 99p store dog leads!

and had a quick go at the faded paint.. literally 20 mins of rubbing in some *cough*Tcut*cough* with a microfibre cloth and off with a polishing towel

before and after pics:

Going to get a quote on some seat rails and harness bar welded in tomorrow.. fingers crossed i can find a decent price

gonna finish polishing up the faded parts tomorrow afternoon too.. she seems to scrub up well!

andddd my speedhunters sticker arrived, so i had to put it on!

Went to get a quote for seat mounts and harness/strut bar fitted today - £150-£200 give or take abit, should have that all sorted next week!

and thats where im up too!

more to come soon, so far im actually loving it! and im so suprised she scrubs up so well!

C&C welcome

All looks good but...your harnesses help with your braking power?! How do I get my harnesses to stop my car quicker?!
