Driving in the snow and ice
My mum never lets me drive my car when it's icy in the morning. However when it snowed I used my car and was perfectly fine. She says 'I can't stop you but...' and if I do crash it'll not do me any favours.
Does anyone think she's being too cautious? I only passed my test in November but I feel confident enough to drive in these conditions, and I'm gona have to learn someday.

I would say she's just looking out for you...just about everyone's parents do that when you've passed Though i dont know you, your mum could think you drive like a nutter

well you've got to drive and experience the snow one day, but just like learning to drive, take your time, give yourself far more time than you need to get there for work etc so you don't feel rushed and can relax, be cautious and always predict the worse so you can be ready for it and evade it. Go by that and you'll never go wrong mate

Hell yes she is being too cautious. my mum isn't going to work tomoz, cos "its too icey" she's in a fucking 5 tonne vectra, and the saxo i can get to not slide at all.
Did struggle to get up a hill today tho, was in 5th at 20mph and just had grip and momentum,
but year i just tell my mum to **** off and grow some balls!

my mums taken my bike keys off me, but then again its completley different :L
My dads been driving over 20 years and he slid out the other day going round a turn and got scared, if you do go out be really careful, chances are you will slide whatever speed you do, my neighbour slid allover his drive trying to straighten the car up earlier, (was fun to watch )

I can understand her concern, offer to take her out in the car in the conditions and proove you can drive it properly in the snow and ice

To be fair, you only need to come across one bad patch then you are fucked. Day at home or risk my car to spend a day at work? Hard one lol

Similar boat as you, but today I felt the safest driver on the road after a van decided he wanted to try reverse into me. (On that note a Saxo horn is not manly enough!!) Snow just brings all the tossers out, just remember make gaps bigger, try set off in second when setting off in snow. All this got me home safely.

What pissed me off so much today when sitting on the school bus was seeing everyone else who has a car in my 6th form driving perfectly fine. I slid a little when it snowed last cos I took a shortcut down a quiet lane that was full of ice. Didn't crash or anything.
I agree with her concern but I think she is being a little ott. When will I learn to drive in these conditions? To do that I will need to drive in them.
The thing is is what do I do if I go out and crash and write off my car? :/

Yeahh don't want the told you so. I still have to go to school. Just without my car, and seeing other people (especially people I don't like) in their cars annoys me when I don't have my car. Especally the other Saxo owner. Sitting on the bus felt awful. I have a licence, car and insurance. Why am I sitting on a bus watching people drive?

Don't try it, i did it by accident........... sort of. i was testing how much grip there was.
-Alex- you should try getting out of our close, 5mph no grip whatsoever and a 90 degree turn.
it was interesting to say the least

So not much by the sound of it. Reading all your stories is making me so jelous because I can't join in. Hopefully school will be closed tomorrow. Might be able to catch up on some work, now I have the bloody textbook I wasn't told I needed.

If you don't drive in it then you won't have the experience of it. I've been driving the MR2 up until this morning, was far too risky, snow on top of ice in my car is a big no-no!
As Mr_X says I'd rather miss a day off work than risk writing my car off.

Youve got to experience them road conidtions one day!
More car control would be an advantage but still wont be enough for driving on snow/ice and recovering a spin or somthing.
I cba with driving in the snow and ice anyway, i hate going 2mph and im paranoid when driving in the snow/ice anyway as im over cautious in my car.

I know. When will I experience them? I'm cautious due to 3rd party insurance.
