have u got a haynes ? if so read it from there and yes it sounds like you may have timed it wrong
also crank the engine over with a ratchet first before you try and run it from the key as you can bend all your valves and stuff

depending in wich cams you have, it will probs make the compression a bit different as they open and close the valves longer/shorter periods of time
so that probs is to be expected but it really does sound like you have done the timing wrong as backfiring is what happens if the timing is out
well check that out and try again and let me know

what profile are the cams?
It must be the timing mate, was it set up correctly
Certain cams need to be adjusted to the correct timing

pt 50s are for standard timing iirc
Just double check the timing again and again bet there is something you've missed out.

the only way to know is that you crank the engine over as it will hit the valves
if nothing hits then they should be correct
by the sounds of it the timing is slightly out

Did you put plenty of oil on the cams to help them for there first time? Crank the engine over with your ratchet and take out the spark plugs this will make it easier for when you crank it over. Just hope you have not bent the valves.
