There isn't really a best one. The best type Is an enclosed type which draws air from the outside of the car as the air is colder so denser. The raceland type and the bmc/ simota are considered the best kits however many have said and proven a sports filter in the original box with a cold air feed is the best.

i was under the immpression as above a good panel filter and cold air feed is just as good as the very expesive bmc cda's, how ever the raceland one probably cost a bit more than a panel filter and air feed but obviously your getting abrand new air box and its looks pretty good
i used a K&N panel filter and cold air feed i attached the cold air feed from the bottom of my air box and attached the other the other end to the original slam panel scoop

I've got a pipercross panel filter, miles better than a cheap induction kit.

my panel filter is great! doesnt make that much noise, if your after snorty induction obviously throttle bodies are best, but a cone filter makes more noise than a panel in an air box

The breathing on the VTR isn't great. I noticed a big improvement when changing to a raceland scoop with green filter. Not too keen on panel filters for the VTR as the pipes seem a bit restrictive.
However for a VTS, I would of said that depending on where you going with mods I'd get a panel filter if no cams were to be fitted in the futue.

the raceland kit with green filter is the best kit you can get,
nothing beats it overall, it makes noise, makes power, and isnt expensive..

Sadly its not made anymore and the Simota is the same design but far superior in quality.
