Ok I'm not having a laugh here, it was on the BBC not long ago.

If you read the highway code you will find it says nothing of the sort.

The speed limit is exactly that. The ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM you are allowed to travel on that stretch of road. It applies to both sides of the road whatever direction you are travelling.

If you can't complete the manoeuvre safely and without breaking the speed limit then you shouldn't be doing it.

But none of us speed anyway so that doesn't matter

Was going to go into the police force last year but all they do is see me, young driver in a slighly modded car, and have a go at me for no reason

I pay my Tax, got my MOT, got insurance, same with the car, nothing wrong, kept in good condition and still they find something to be picky on the nobs.

This thread misses out the main enemy when it comes to speed camera's -

ANPR / Camera Cars (marked or unmarked traffic police) !

(That white smart car will be an ANPR attempt of a traffic car)

Traffic use VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder) to record you time over a given distance. They can do this while they follow you, or by parking up and looking at a given distance in the road.

Basically they have a computer in their car linked to an inbuilt video recorder.

If you are getting followed (or even if you are following); when your car passes a fixed point (anything - lamp post, post box, street sign - any fixed reference) they press the time start button. When they pass the same point they press the distance start button. After they have followed you for long enough (or they think you are likely to slow down), they will find another fixed reference and press the time stop button. When they pass it, they press the distance stop button. This works out, and instantly and records the distance you have done over a given time - which obviously equates to your speed.

If you are not getting followed; more dangerously, VASCAR can easily be used on any road which as a good clear view of a long stretch (A-roads with fly over bridges). If you have ever noticed them white rectangles, circles, or diamonds in the middle of the road - that is what these are for. There will be two over a given distance (usually about half a mile) that traffic can easily see and record with their on-board camera. The distance between the two markings is pre set, and all the operator needs to do is press time start when you go over the first marking and time stop after you pass the second. This works out time over the given distance which obviously equates to your speed.

The only real defence against these type of cameras is to be aware. Look out for typical unmarked traffic signs. Two tossers in the car, cameras at the front and rear. LED's in the bumper/grill, no pointless stickers/reg logos, GPS airwave aerials (1 short stubby one), tracker aerials (4 big ones) authority number plates (YJ05 XXX or YK05 XXX, or newer in Yorkshire - look at marked police and match the beginning to similar unmarked traffic numbers).

If you get caught, check the evidence - if it's there.. there is little you can do

most of the ones around here are DKxx, except one corsa i saw at a petrol station with a copper in which was SO05!

To be fair, if you are not speeding and you have all your documents in order....i.e tax, mot and insurance.....then you have nothing to worry about

If you are breaking the law then you can't really moan when you get caught

Speed cameras are just money making devices, all they do is stop people speeding until the white floor markings dissapear and them boom....they speed up again
Waste of time and money!
