Vts 160bhp project
Hi guys
Once the new year is here I am planning on buying a vts project and stripping the engine down and rebuilding it.im looking to get about 160bhp out of it. What will I need to do to get that figure but keep it reliable.
I'm thinking, cams, stand alone management, decent exhaust and a proper custom intake. Will this get me to my goal or not?
Cheers

Will do. Just been having a look and it seems like 150-160 is easily achievable. Still want it to stay reliable.

standard cams but a ropey ICV meaning cammed without proof, universal cone mounted on the exhaust manifold, a scaffold pipe welded in place of the cat and a badly fitted back box I'm certain will make 160bhp looking at every single VTS thats been advertised for sale recently.

Not my cup of tea to be honest. I've got 2 other cars already so no rush to complete it. No half measures for me. Never have and never will.

I used to be a fully paid member. I guess it will be £10 well spent as I think I'm going to need lots of advice over the next few months.

The figure is easily achievable and in my opinion it's A LOT more reliable than boosted VTS/106's that try and get over 200bhp.
I only ran 142bhp at Knockhill which was enough for me to get steady 65 seconds but I felt it needed another 20-30bhp to stay with the big boys. People going over 200bhp just gave them so much hassle with gearboxes, driveshafts etc.
Good luck

Great figure. Link me up some vids, I'd be interested in watching it go around a track.
Mine was great around the corners of Knockhill, I could catch the bigger AWD cars but on the 2 straights it struggled.
Over the years I have seen a tonne of boosted 106's and every single one just seemed a nightmare.

Close but probably not going to hit the magic 160 bhp figure.
I think you need throttle bodies.
My spec would be.
Cat Cams 1321743
AT Power Throttlebodies
Emerald or DTA ecu.
Supersprint Exhaust System.
Thats a very driveable road car setup. You could up the cam profile and then go for a forged bottom end, but I dont really think its necessary or that great an idea for a car that could be driven in all conditions.
The sound of throttle bodies barking under acceleration is something special

Kam
would i need any head work to allow for the cams or would this run on a standard head? i have been reading that with some wilder cams a fair amount of head work is required to allow for the correct gaps. don't fancy blowing up my new engine on the first crank.

also with ITB's would i need to fit bigger injectors to allow for more fuel or are the vts ones capable of this amount of feed?

rule 1 when fitting a cam, rotate by hand to check clearances
The Cat Cams 1321743 are about the most extreme you can fit without any headwork. You still should check clearances as there are a few 16v heads which seem to have more material and have to be machined a little to fit cams. They are rare though

mine was done as follows 122bhp" std apart from supersprint manifold and air filter"
throttle bodies fitted and fitted omex to std loom and I mapped it 146bhp
then flowed a head and 708"s and I remapped ...was 168bhp
next was newman ph4 another mapping session and shes at 179bhp.and 142lbsft torque.
be careful with cams though if you have a head which was skimmed (I had witness marks on the pistons) with 708s so had to put cut-outs in pistons
