Sorry, are you saying I should actively investigate the payments I’m making, even after British Gas have confirmed them multiple times? I am the first out of my group of friends to purchase a house and so the topic of bills or energy prices has never come up with my friends. Prior to buying a house, I rented for three years with my girlfriend. During that time, she paid all the bills and we never discussed how much they were costing. After purchasing my house, I signed up to British Gas based on a recommendation from my mortgage advisor. I have no previous exposure to energy costs and have never looked at comparison websites.

The complaint is ongoing (as said in post #25). In my opinion, £200 a month is not a reasonable repayment plan. I could buy my girlfriend a nice E93 BMW for less than that haha.

You can't buy a nice E93 for less than £200 a month because if you're paying monthly then you haven't bought it you wanger.

I'm confused here like. If you were giving them readings and the bill came back with the readings that you'd given them on it, how have they undercharged you? Was the price per unit wrong?

Finance brav. Gerrin’ u the things u want, now.

Well this is my point. I thought my bill was low. So I contacted them, they said it was fine. I then received another bill, which I thought was low again. So I contacted them again, this time they asked me to send them a meter reading, which I did, and they sent me a new bill, which was the same as it was prior to me sending them a meter reading. This process continued for months, until they landed a fat letter on my doorstep saying I owe them £1k+, then told me I have to pay them back at £200pm. My argument, was that it’s their fuck up. They should be apologetic and allow me to negotiate a payment plan – I’m not disputing the payment, I am complaining to them for the fact that they’ve fucked up, despite me trying to tell them, and now they’re demanding a payment plan that inconveniences me financially.

I had the same with EON...

Phoned up with readings yet the bills were coming in fairly low..

In January I was hit with a £600 bill which I complained about...A month went past but as I kept the dates and times when I called with the readings they didn't have a leg to stand on and eventually I ended up paying a fraction of what they were trying to charge me..

I quickly left and haven't had a problem with southern electricity so far.

UPDATE:

Although I am in the middle of a dispute with British Gas, I have received a new letter. Which states: because of my unpaid bill, my case is being passed to a Collections Agency who will be visiting my property within the next few days to recover the cost.

I will be charged a fee of £54 by the Collections Agency, along with a further £52 for the application for a legal warrant to enter my house, and an exclusion fee of £150.

I think the next step it to contact the Energy Ombudsman Services.

You say you had were the first of your mates to buy a house so didnt talk to them about it, but then you say you rented a house with your lass, who paid all the bills, so you didnt think to ask her?! i take it you just appeared on earth one day? Cos what i did is ask parents and other people who owned a house - people at work and that. OR do i take it you dont work or have parents?

Nah mate it's not a life rule it's just common sense asking people who know. Defo don't have common sense. Asking on a saxo forum and then ignoring The advice then given for weeks too. Good one!

I'm just going to point this out, as it appears this has passed you by, but this is a pretty valid point for the future which Nicole has already touched on.

You really need to be on top of how much your energy costs, and how much you're using. If you move into a property in spring, and by mid summer you're using £20 a month gas, then set up a direct debit accordingly, come winter when it's colder and you're using more, your budgets are going to be fucked. You want to be overpaying during the summer months slightly against what's actually being used, so come winter when you use more, you're eating into the credit built up and not paying more.

Same with electric etc.
