first three are ok, but the last three are not exactly exciting.
good effort tho, least the night ones are in focus, and still.

Some good first shots there, great entry level SLR the D40.....it's what I started on, when it wasn't so cheap
Nice to see the word Nikon in a post because from what I've seen most people on this site are Canon heads
I'd just recommend taking your camera as many places as you can and trying out as many different style of photography, make sure to post them here for critique

Yeah its very canon related here, reason i got a one was because of the people on here, but it does mean i can nick their lenses at shows etc

ive just had a play with my camera and sort of got to grips with the manual setting on the lens for focusing etc.. will have a go at using this at the weekend! them pics were taken using shutter and apperture priority modes but over the weekend will try and use all manual as ive heard its definatly the way to go..
whislt learning going to try everything like you say to get to grips with all types of photography.. the camera with a 18-55mm lens cost me £245 new. fancy getting another lens so i have abit of a choice but not sure what the best one to go for is!

tamron 55-200mm should be got for about £50 new, not an amazing lens at all, but extends reach and will be some fun.
