Default first road test

right-o car got its first road test today and good and bad has come out of it.

firstly lets get bad.
scratched the freshly painted bumper on the lower splitter, pratt move but i can dust it in.
caught the lower brace and bent it. again not a massive problem but more time
steering wheel is out of alignment
exhaust catches just about eveywhere since the sports cat went in.

now the good

LEDA'S ARE FUCKING MEGA there is a reason these dampers were so expensive

more comfortable than the apex, less crashy but firmer. they are the don.

i have set the gemety up with 10' toe in and have yet to check the camber so dont have an exact figure on how much neg is built in.

the turn in is fantastic i will probably stiffen it up abit (i was on bumpy roads)

once the pads had come up to temp they were good too.

it feels a little quicker than i used too. manifold and other bits maybe?

i have to rectify these little things give it a detail then go tearing up the roads.
i need more power too now i have a thoroughly sorted chassis.

Sounds positive mate !!!

You're not that low are you ?! Bloody lower braces, not a nice noise when you do catch them on things.

only 30mm ish ross it was a combo of things.
undulating road, damper on softest setting and me being over enthusiastic on the gas.
i left a massive scrape on the road and it is a foul sound i had vissions of the front end on the floor.

Definitely sounds like the LEDA's are doing the business - can you change the damping of them? Like preload and rebound ?

Get them on the hardest setting

yeah they are adjusable for preload. when i send them to be serviced again i may get them to change them to be adjustable for rebound too.

hardest setting is hard and i mean hard. they will be massivley overdamped.

cant wait to hit the track now. i need more power.

ross do you have to cut the scuttle to fit your bodies?

The end of the trumpets are around 20-30mm away from the scuttle itself, so obviously with a filter I had to cut it - as I wasn't running them unfiltered

If you ran like 40mm trumpets (or 30mm if they do them?) and then a flat back plate for the filter as opposed to my stepped one (50mm deep) they'd fit spot on without cutting the scuttle.

Trumpets are 45mm wide, as I had the end of the DCOE bodies tapered out from 42mm to 45mm by Colin Satchell - just because the 45mm trumpets were easier to hold of in different sizes

URmmmmmmm............... I'm not sure tbh mate.

When I was reading up about filters, the general consensus was that they did hit power - by how much I don't know, there were different opinions out there.

My opinion about it is that it depends on how close you have items near the end of the trumpets - like having the socks crammed in over the end of the trumpets isn't going to be great, whereas having the end of the trumpets 40-50mm away from the end should be okay?

Another thing worth bearing in mind is the sausage filters have an internal metal gauze that stops the bodies eating away at the filter - whereas the socks don't so I think you need to run them a bit further away from the end of the trumpet ?

I've not run mine without a filter to see how it affects the fueling on my map - might run it without a filter for a bit after FCS to try it out before I split my engine up.

I suppose it all boils down to the restriction in airflow to the end of the trumpet?

I'm no mathematician but presumably there's a greater surface area of filter running 4 socks than a sausage filter ? thus being more restrictive ?

Plus I suppose you have to look at the density of the foam in the filter too ?

God knows mate

Hmmmm. Bodies are quite a large expense and not necessary for my application but I love that noise.

Just add them to the list to buy in a years time when you want to spice up your relationship with the car

Well mechanically the car is done.

All the bits on the list are done and while I was breaking my old mk1 I pinched the gear lever set up and modified it so it a short throw shifter by cutting and welding the lower part changing the pivot point feel nice and tight why Citroën couldn't of added that bit of length from factory is beyond me.

I have l a full detail left to do.

Sorry for the lack of pics but trust me there will be plenty to come.

For the new engine I'm on the look out for a cheap vts bottom end.
