Welding & ECU's - Saxperience

Rite, gonna have to bodge the exhausty up tomorrow to stop a realy annoying rattle. My main worry is that when i'm welding it up should I isolate the ECU so I don't fry it while i'm welding?

Any help would be appriciated.

generally its fine, if you are really worried disconnect it, its a 2min job at most.

wouldnt do any harm to do that i guess, take the battery off aswell dude

Cheers guys, just wasn't too sure as i know MIG can bugger your mobile if your not careful. If you see me trying to get hold of a new 1.1 spi ECU then it won't have been the best weekend!

iv usually got my phone in my pocket when im in the workshop or penpushing... i thought it was tig that buggered up your mobile...? anyone no the answer? oops!

I was told at college it was any welding. Or maybe that was if you tried to weld your phone? Bugger it i'll just leave my phone in kit bag to be on the safe side

you could well be right, been a while since i was taught welding at college! iv not broken my phone yet though!lol. ill ask the guys on the shopfloor their opinions!lol

Try and ring their mobiles and see what happens.....

they said its TIG that buggers your mobile due to the high frequencey

i welded my car with the ecu in place, i just disconnected the battery. all was well

i work every day welding MIG and TIG, stainless and ally, and have had zero issues with my mobile ever going tits up...

as for welding cars... battery off.. and if the customer has a trick ECU or digital dash they come off too.. i don`t fancy replacing ££££ equipment..

and connect +and neg lead to each other where battery was --so no possibility of spikes back feeding through chassis .
It isalways advisable to AT LEAST disconnect ecu plug.
sme goes for charging battrey up or using jump leads when connected to car --make sure you at least always remove postivie lead first when disconnecting, better idea is do not charge batteries when on car .
