A working map sensor when unplugged would make the engine stall or at best idle/hunt very badly. The map sensor gives the ECU the Manifold Absolute Pressure so it can calculate load. (or something along these lines).
A faulty map sensor can cause poor running and idling but are usually quite reliable.

Describe the fault and you might get some more input to help you out with this
