The latest Routers and Wireless cards use N technology so can achieve 100mb+ speeds anyway. Its rare people are connected at the old 54Mbps Wireless Speeds these days.
You will find that drop outs and poor speeds on Wifi are more likely related to poor performing Wireless radios in devices and interference on the 2.4Ghz frequency.
It makes me laugh how many people do a speed test on their phone and they expect the exact same result on their Xbox/PS3 but that's not how it works.
If reliability is more important than bandwidth, it may be worth connecting on the 5Ghz frequency as this has many more non overlapping channels and far less interference.
