Lads....
the 20 mb/s is adsl2+, the speed will depend on how busy the line / exchange is and how far you are away from the exchange.
Cable internet is slightly different but pretty much works on the same prinicple - depends how many people are using it.
Anyone know what the UKs fastest cable speeds are? We've just introduced 100mb/s in Melbourne over here, but there is always "caps" on the downloads, once the 'Limit' is met then the speed slows to dial up speed until the end of the month which sucks big time.

i'm with a small provider most people have never heard of called plus net
this is what mine is running at too be honest means nothing to me its fast enough for me customer service is great when i rarely need to call them 2 times last 4 years always works as for download this is a copy of their text
1 - Broadband is described as up to 8Mb or 20Mb because your actual download speeds will vary depending on your telephone line and where you live. When you sign up we'll check your line and give you an estimate of the speed you should get. Download speeds will vary a lot in the first 10 days after connection and will then become more consistent.
not the cheapest but i will never change unless forced to as i said it always works never had any network issues and cutomer service fine

As i said above.... 20mb/s is a maximum speed, your speed will fluctuate depending on distance from the exchange & how many people are using the internet at any one time in your area!
At work we are 500meters away from the exchange & last time we checked it was 21mb/s on adsl2+, but you will only get that if you are near enough next door to the exchange and in a very developed modern area.

O2 did explain to me that the max speed i will get is around 14mb due to the area i'm in. Can't really complain though for £9.70 a month, works a treat.

dont bother with Tiscali if you want customer service. Their technical support dont know what NAT settings are as its not in their step by step guidebook they read from. I spent 5 minutes of silence as he flicked aimlessly through his documents before they said they cannot help me.

Im like no? Im paying for 20mb.. Then he just basically said there is nothing wrong with Modem.. Sooo?..

This is at uni, pretty speedy upload ide say!
I get around 10 mbps all the time when i am at home and that is on virgin, not sure why we get that speed as we only pay for 2 mb i think, maybe because we have been a customer for 10 years.

Speed tests are crap, they simply don't put enough data through the line to test the connection.
You need to find a download without a cap that is over 100mb and see what speed you get. Keep an eye on any fluctuations as well as the time you are trying to download as at peak time the contention ratio may max out meaning you will get slower internet.
I had virgin 20mb cable for 13 months and always got full speed. I've now been on virgin 10mb cable for about 14 months and always get full speed instantly.

damage the router that youve got as it will slow down the connection, they only check to see if its doing what its supposed to, but they cant test how crap it is, put some water on it or something and ring them telling them it wont turn on or anything and theyll have to replace it, then ull get faster speeds with the new modem.

Im with O2 atm
They use ADSL 2 and offer speeds up to 24MB depending on how far you are from the exchange server etc. I've been on a constant 18MB line for the past 12 months.
Technical support seems very knowledgable. If your an O2 Mobile Phone Customer then its only £17 a month!
