Default Buying an SSD (Solid State Drive)?

Nerds,

I'm after an SSD but know nothing about them - What I do understand is that it's the 'controller' is the important bit which dictates speed. I have a Sata III connections so would like a drive that can utilise this to the max. Looking at around 120 Gb or there abouts. Any suggestions??!

Ta!

Honestly I wouldn't bother wasting your money on one just yet.

They are still getting faster and the amount of IOPS is slowly increasing as well as slowly falling in price. It wasn't that long ago that the cheapest were around £2 per GB, now they are down to about £1.40 per GB.

Plus if you want faster startup and plan on upgrading to Windows 8 when its released, with it being designed for Tablets as well its rumored to have huge startup improvements and be able to boot in a matter of seconds and not the minutes it takes currently on a standard HDD.

But if I did have to suggest an SSD I would have to say the range by OCZ seem very good and I've never heard a bad word about them compared to many other manufacturers who tend to have problems.

If it's for a PC look into the WDD Raptor range I used to boot from one in a ridiculously short time & they're very cheap now.

I've been looking into this, the one that seems to be one of the quickest with the best reviews sounds like the c300.

Still out of my price range mind.

I looked at Crucial but decided to go with the Corsair Force 3 120 Gb - It's a similar price to the Crucial too. I installed it today and all I can say is this is single handedly the best upgrade you can do. Windows boots up super fast, programs load instantly, windows shuts down instantly, installations take seconds - everything is super fast. It's awesome. Highly recommended.

I've been looking at getting one of these; http://www.ebuyer.com/product/222310

As I couldn't live with 120gb.. and all the reviews are good!

But seem's you've already made your choice (Y)

I think you are missing the point.

The SSD is just used to store the OS and software (Basically the things that will benefit from much faster speeds.)

You then use a second drive as your primary storage for documents, pictures, music etc which don't need the speed.

The drive you picked is rubbish, the 500GB is just standard storage and then you only get a mere 4GB of flash storage. For the same price you could get a 500GB disk drive and a separate 32GB SSD.

Yeeaaap I've got it setup exactly how brenz describes it. SSD for OS and programs (the 'large' chunks of data basically where the performance of SSD really comes into it's own), this allows for fast load up of OS, near instant load up of apps. Literally Chrome, Word, Porn etc feel like they're even before I've raised my finger from the initial mouse click.

Then a 1Tb for docs, music and garbage.
