Crankcase Breather filter fitting...

I have just got hold of some samco hose and I will be moving my piperx filter to the front of the engine bay tmrw.

I have blocked the breather hole on the filter and have fitted a breather filter to the end of the crankcase hose. Although, I would like to position the crankcase breather facing upwards and do away with the hose its attached too.

My problem is that there is another small piece of pipe going into the other end, which can be seen in the pic.

What I want to know is can I just block this piece of pipe and tuck it away anywhere? Or is it important to have it there?
