i matte had one an it was pretty good.. or do i go all out an get a flip out screen an a new alarm system?

this is a very good HU, but it depends on you what you want to listen to and look at in your car.
this has rather small display, so if you want to view video you must connect a display to this one or simply get the one with the flip screen

jvc has very good sound, so if you want sound, and display is just a bonus, you should get this one

Personally i think JVC car audio is crap. They are at the very low end of the h.u range, and i find that pioneer/alpine/kenwood etc are better.

id be getting an alarm first mate, first thing you should do beforeyou even think about headunits etc
