your better off with a machine polish to "bring it back to life". if you dont know anyone with one then a body shop will do it for you.
pics would help so we can see how bad it is.

It really depends on bad it is, if it's really minor (ie. you can gently drag a finger nail over it and it doesnt catch) then there's a good chance you can correct it with a abrasive cutting compound (T-Cut, G3 etc..), and machine buff it.

as said before if your fingernail dont stick in the groove you should be fine so if you did only catch it yeah it will come out because at work we use 2000 1500 wet and dry to flatten larger scrathes out then machine polish mate.

Should machine polish out then mate with a good abrasive compound.

True, T-Cut isnt that good, but i mean it might take a quite abrasive polish, the type that cant be used by hand.
It would help if you could get a decent pic up of the mark, otherwise if you're polishing it out, start of with a light abrasive, Autoglym Paint Renovator is a good one from personnal experience. Start of soft with a couple of coats, then if needs be, move onto something like the Autoglym.
If that doesnt do it then use something more abrasive, which is gonna need machine buffing.
