I'd have a good look at the clutch connection on the top of the gearbox, it may be that's it's a bit loose and vibrating causing this noise. It wouldn't effect the clutch or gears it's just annoying I would imagine!

Release bearing? Usually the other way around tho, noisy when pressed and quiet when released.

It will be the thrust bearing then! Which means you need a new clutch!

You'll be fine to drive it, but if it gets louder then you'll need to get it done. The last thing you want is for it to sieze up. Listen out for grinding/loud whining that's the best way to judge it's life!!

Should be ok for a while, they can break up but quite rare I think. Almost all my 1st cars had the "feature" until I replaced the clutches. Change everything when u do it tho, save it being off the road again and having to take the bits off again.

Yes to the above, and take a close look at the release arm pivot too, wear there can be iffy.
