dodgy steering and alternator

how do you know if your steering columns gone or your tracking cus my wheel turns as if its power steering at the mo and its not,the steering seems really light.also my alternator is making like a squeeling noise which is doing my head in is there any way of stopping it being noisy.the garage said it could be alternator bearings.

sounds like the belt needs ajusting or replacing
