Default weird problem help please!!!

right well my headgasket went other week so stripped down and replaced when i took it for a drive first round the block twice then bit further and was alright so went for a drive taking it easy not accelerating hard did about 15 miles and started to overheat. once got the car home there was still oil in water so had hours flushing through till barely any was in and run for 20 mins or so on garden fine. took it round the block twice and found that temperature was alright but had used a bit of oil and was running weird popping all the time on tick over and not accelerating normal.
a friend said it may be a crack in the head?
any help would be much appreciated thanks.
also what would be needed to put a JP4 head on? its a cammed vts would it need remap anything else etc..

Ibthink the jp4 head with cams will need a j4 h/g to give clearance but apart from that just your vts springs and lifters changing into it
