If you're thinking 306 you'd be better off with a hdi in my opinion thaan the 1.8 anyway.
HDI is cheap insurance, good fuel economy and vtr pace.

Whats wrong witha 306, i'm tempted to start an arguement but i wont, especially not on a saxo forum, but one thing i will say is that you're a lot safer in an accident.
You want to get a hdi, a 1.9td or a 2.0 16v
In my opinion the 1.8 16v engine isn't that much better when its a heavy car, its revvy but not that much torque.
Get yourself a hdi, instantly remap it to 120bhp or more, i work with a 165bhp hdi, not that much is needed to get there either. Dturbo is mega reliable, and i'm currently doing a 150bhp project for someone, which is about the max they will take without needing heawork and nitrous.

i was talking to the derv docs about gettin it remapped wid a front mount intercooler which they say would take it too 162bhp with a remap at stage 2

Mine doesnt smoke too much... EDIT: tends to be the older Dturbo models
Although i havent had the best of luck with mine tbh, got rid of my VTR to get one...
its a more solid built car, and isnt far off Vtr pace (as said), also the fact it has good tuning potential is a plus, remap to 125 bhp for like 200 quid.
But as i've found its still a french car ... things like to break and stop working, although the engine is still going very strong at 97,000 miles!

The diesel engines on peugeots are quite decent from what I recall.
All diesels can dump loads of black smoke...
