Default what does a map 'look' like

now i may be talking rubbish, i am just trying to deepen my understanding.

when a car is mapped they change ignition timing and fuel. but what does that look like.
also are there given ballpark figures for say the ignithion advance/retard of ph3's the same for fueling.

thats basically the efficiency of the car, which is what a map aims for, to be very efficient,

matching the fuelling to the rpm, and MAP pressure(using the air temp sensor, this gives the quantity of air going in), so matching the fueling, and ignition spark to this, will give you an efficient map

uprated cams, basically open the valves with better timing, to allow for better combustion if the fuelling is upped, therefore more power from the cylinder

fuelling is very easy to get right, depending on the type of car a base target arf can be used, and then fine tuned on a rr or on the road to get the maximum power, and maintain afr under transient conditions.

with regards to ignition it is a little more difficult to set up, this can not accuratly done on the road, for this either a rolling road or engine dyno needs to be used. And the igntion advance until either detonation occurs, or roll over (where the torque declines before det does)

how long is a piece of string?

When i assisted fitting catcam 734 in an engine that originally has 708's we retarded the ignition by i think 5 degrees across the map simply so that we could run the cams in and drive it to be mapped.

would you not be wanting as little advace as possible but acheiving maxumim power, as the power will level off even if you keep advacing it.
