Default How bad is heatsoak

The previous owner bunged a chavvy ripspeed open air filter from halfords which I can feel it severely affecting my engine's performance after the engine is fully warmed in this hot weather. Ive stalled so many times at traffic lights due to my VTR feeling like a 500cc motor and sometimes It feels like the car is strangled for some air!

Anyone know if this induction kit if any good?

never used that one before. but enclosed induction prevent the heatsoak you are currently getting. best bet is to read feedback on item. concentrate on the bad feedback coz that gives you a better idea of the cons of it. hope that helps mate

That induction is good i reckon, basically the same as a BMC CDA but without the better materials used, it will definetly be better than your open ripspeed but not as good as a real BMC lol

It's not carbon? But it would still look pretty much the same except for that tbh

I might give that kit a go. Will have to wait until summer for some funds to arrive though.

True, I seriosuly doubt its anything half decent. Then again, its easily said about my current ripspeed halfrauds filter.

There isn't going to be any serious rise in bay temperatures due to the weather.

It sounds like another problem imo. ICV, Map sensor. etc.

Ah sorry, Just re-read it. lol. Properly this time.

How old is this filter? Could do with a clean possibly?

I'd personally go for a standard set up with a green or K&N filter, but hey ho. Each to their own.

Really not sure how old it is but the previous only said it came with it when he bought it so about 4 years old or 25k - 35k miles.

A cheap filter would be lucky to last 35k miles lol

Just get the one you posted in the link

Open filters are as good as the enclosed jobbies. Heat soak is just a clever way of worrying joe public and making him buy the more expensive enclosed option.

On a hot summers day sat in traffic, the effects of heat soak may reduce throttle response a bit. As soon as you are moving, cool air from the front of the vehicle displaces any warm air in the engine bay and heat soak becomes nothing more than bullshit.

The only time an enclosed airbox is any good is when its a dynamically tuned and tested shape that is proven to add horsepower, not a cheap bmc or ecosse vacuum formed filter shield.

Dude, ive just felt my cheap, halfrauds open air filter after a spirited drive and and it will cause a burn to a baby's skin. It is very very very warm. Also, my filter is bunged straight onto my throttle body, right at the back of the engine getting nice hot air from the engine and exhaust manifold.

Yes, its the same as a BMC just a little smaller compacity and carbon 'look' outer shell.

and the actual filter inside...

but in a nutshell, its the same

i used open cones on both the engines in my car, if your going fast enough heatsoak isnt a problem
in all seriousness though it shouldnt affect the engine that much, there must be something else wrong

And your open filter was right at the back of the engine bay near the firewall? as there is a lot of heat in the engine bay - just try sticking ur hand on the rocker cover after 1 hours driving - thats what is getting sucked in

edit - also forgot to add in my first post, theres no cold air feed.
