Default Gearbox!

Hi, i recently bought a 1997 VTR and noticed it was very whiny while drivin, had a look and found i had a cracked gearbox meaning NO OIL! But im struggling to find another gearbox do i need another vtr box or can i put another in?

Any box will fit, if you do motorway miles get another vtr box, if you want faster accelration at the cost of a higher revving (and therefore more thirsty) engine go for a vts or 1.1 box.

So would a 106 xsi gearbox fit as iv just been offered one for a good price?

Yes it will, before buying it though wiggle the input shaft around by hand and check for wear. If it moves up/down/left/right then it's gonna rattle on idle and will slowly get worse.

I have a cracked gearbox which is whining too, Still looking for a new box though. until then i'll run it and see how long it will last

i might just wait and hold out for another vtr box just to play it safe, yea mine was still fine to drive but dunno how much it would have lasted cos werent of drop of oil in it! lol just had enough of being heard comin for the wrong reason!

How bad is your whine? mine is only noticable on 3rd/4th and 5th. With 1st and 2nd you will not notice its there. Ill be very surprised if its still running with no oil in the box as it goes into gears very smoothly!
