had a blowing exhaust now car has no power whatsoever!

had a problem where my old downpipe on my 1.1 had split round the middle and was blowing heavily. i bought a new one from halfords and replaced it, threw old one away as soon as i removed it as the tat man was on his way past. fitted the new one and it wasnt fitting quite right.
it blew gasket out from manifold-downpipe in a matter of hours, i took it off and resealed it with paste and every time it blew heavily within a few hours, looked at the face of it and it looked slightly warped.
drove it home from my mates and it kept bogging out making a loud 'bwaaaaaarp noise' like it was gettin too much fuel or something, overheating light came on twice, each time i left it to cool having no choice as i needed to get it home. when i got it home i flushed the coolant system out and noticed there was a slight color in the water like oil/petrol was in it? cleaned the plugs aswell they were looking rather dry.
took it to the garage near me as its just stressing me now, they kept it 2 days, bent the downpipe back into shape and sealed it with loads of putty, took it out, still would barely move, took it back. im thinking its the head gasket? garage have annoyed me as they didnt even test the car they just sealed it and gave it back to me, im now on day 3 of not having a car which is irritating enough as it is!
anyone had the same problem? cheers all
