Default sanding to bare metal & polishing?

My golf bonnet needs repainting as some chump did a terrible rattle can job on it! I was thinking of doing something funky so thought maybe I will get it to a bare metal state polish it up as best I can and then lacquer it!

I don't have any power tools so do you reckon it would be better to sand it down by hand with a variety of different grade papers or what about paint stripping it & then polishing it up? Also with regards to polishing it im guessing its going to be a massive ball ache without any power tools?

Interesting idea.....if i was you i would cover the thing in automotive paint stripper to get the paint off instead of sanding it.

would that work for the whole car? other cars paint job is so bad, and really can;t be arsed to sand it all, so automotive paint stripper or nitromors do the job good enough and just sand up the bad parts?

It will totally strip the paint back to bare metal matey and its very easy to do......apply the stuff...leave it to eat through the layers of paint and then wash it off.

Would just need a quick sanding to create a key for the paint matey.

Alot of body shops are reluctant to take on parts already prepped as they like to do it themselves usually so they know the work has been carried out by them.

Yeah, that's a good point about it not sticking to bare metal so well but I'm sure it will be ok... I have done bike frames the same way and it has worked. I think the lacquer may take some of the shine from it though which will be a bit gay.

This is going to be an experiment because the bonnet is completely fucked anyway so worst case scenario I will just get it re-painted by a body shop

If the bonnet has had any filler on it then it will look shite after you take the paint off and realise its got p38 allover it to fill the indents in. I think the chrome wrap would be the best plan IMO
