Default VTR ignition fault

Hello, I have searched this forum for an answer but have been unable to find one.
My saxo vtr makes a loud screeching/scraping sound when i turn the key in the ignition. I can eventually get it to start after a few attempts however its getting more and more frequent and it seems as though I have to turn the key quite slowly.

Does anyone have any ideas what it is and how it can be repaired? i've been told a number of different things - starter motor, spark plugs, electrical fault?

any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Dan

come again?

i'm not overly clever when it comes to cars. All i know is that when I turn the key in the ignition it makes a sound similar to when you try and put a car in gear without the clutch down, you know, that screech type sound?

when you turn the key a solenoid engages the starter motor. the motor/selenoid can stick sometimes. might be what your hearing dude.

if not im sure someone on here will of had a similar problem and put you right

tbh mate its not something ive played around with, as its one of the few things that hasnt broken yet on my vtr!lol i guess you could stick a multimeter over the starter motor just to see what sort of powers there, may not be enough to engage the motor. as i said im sure someone will post who knows more about it than me

Either the starter is not engaging properly with the flywheel or the flywheel ring gear is worn out. My old TU engined 205 would do it. Put your car in 2nd gear and roll it a few foot then try starter again - should work fine than.
