Default Coilpack

Im having issues with my vts running pretty rough on idle (seems to missfire a little at around 2-3k) and also pops loads on the over-run while driving. It has got worse over the last six months or so and we reckon its the coil pack that is on the way out however was just wondering weather its worth checking any sensors before purchasing a new one which I know are pretty pricey. The car failed its emissions pretty badly at its last MOT. No fault codes have been detected either and the lambda readings seem fine when it was plugged into diagnostics. Is there any way of checking the coilpack itself and can such symptoms be caused by a worn out coil pack?
