Default iMac?

Anybody got one? Reccomend any?

Used a few of mates iMacs and MacBooks and they are powerfull machines, seem to be LOADS better than PCS.

Mainly due to the performance and speed of them. Plus it's almost imposible for them to get infected with viruses and they dont need drivers installed everytime you plug in sumthin to the UBS port!

Worth the £1000+ tho?

Would be for audio/video/multimedia work.

Cheers!

I have
Two ipads
Two itouches
A mac book
A macbook pro
A mini mac
An imac

And im tossing the idea of getting a macbook air!

I like em, abuse each one for different thing.
I can justify what i have and how much i paid for them.

I would say yes, to anyone thinking aot getting one, but there aree plenty of spec'd up PCs that will do a good enough job at most things for the same price.

For the price you would get a much more powerful PC.

If i was going for a MAC it woul dbe for the customer service and OS... Not the specs because they dont really match the price.

Just moved to an Imac and been PC my whole life. This one http://store.apple.com/uk/configure/...co=MTg1ODMzNDk

Found my work rate has improved dramatically (photography) and would deffo buy another.

They hold their value better than PCs. Go look at the second hand market and used macs still fetch good £££. Pcs this isnt the case.

Ps... moved to right section

saying a mac is better for virus's etc is something called security through obscurity. If mac had the dominant share im sure virus's would be rip them to pieces.

I dont like most of apples products,

Their desktops are not good value for money, you can get a better specced pc for less.
Their phones/ipads are over priced compared to similar/better devices. Theyre also very locked down which annoys me personally.

The macbook/macbook pro on the other hand are pretty good i rekon, peformance wise theyre nothing special but the battery life and the trackpad thing is a really nice touch.

However, alot of people claim they are better built.
Im typing to you now on a macbook - its had a new mobo (£400!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and ive also had to replace the hdd and battery.. its only a few years old too.

MacOS on the other hand does my tree in, its a waste of time. Im a die hard linux user though which would scare the crap out of most people.

yea was thinking of moving to the 'apple world'. Altho I do rate the Apple OS, I believe PCs are also good. But for what I'm looking to do, an iMac would be better.

How long would you expect an iMac to last for. PCs are expected about 3-4years i'd say

No longer than a PC really. They might be worth a bit more at the end of it, but reliability and spec they are the same as pcs under the skin.

They're identical to macs. Build yourself a pc for much less money and install MAC OSx on it, hackintosh ftw. Don't fuel their greed.

By the time you have bought the stuff that is compatible with it, you may as well of purchased an actual mac.

Until then you put shitdows 7 on it and it all clogs and slows down within a few weeks... Macs are more stable, the end. Like putting iphone OS on a blackberry doesn't make it an iphone. If you want to make a bacon omelette, then you've got to brake a pig.

All those saying macs are underspecced compared to a pc make me laugh, a mac doesnt need to be specced up as much as a pc to run as fast or faster as a higher spec pc, its all to do with the OS being faster. Not saying a 400MHz mac will outperform a 4GHz PC obviously, but the macs are faster even with the lower specs.

There are so many reasons to buy a Mac rather than Windows right now.
For example the App store for Mac,
Windows doesn't have anything on that level for general software and the price point is amazing.
As has been said Macs don't need an over spec'd machine because the OS is tailored to the machines to optimise the hardware in them and not be wasteful.
As well as all the other stuff if you do have a problem or want training you can walk straight into a store and have that.... You can't really with a Windows machine.

I have a slight advantage that that I was brought up on many different platforms. So for me swapping the OS I am using is no big issue. For the most part my least favourite is windows for several reason. The biggest advantage with Mac OS is that the OS is built round a given hardware and this guaranties stability and compatibility. The other advantage is online security. This is a combination of very concept the OS is built on but also the small user base.

Some people are still worried that a Mac will not be able to run every product you wish it to but these days a Mac ran run windows as good as any PC so you can happily run have both OS installed. As for installing Mac OS on a PC for the most part no you can't. But if you build your PC with a given hardware spec you can get Mac OS to boot on it. Though no PC hardware is currently 100% compatible so it really gets rid of the biggest advantage of using Mac OS.

If your just in to web browsing, emails, watching videos, listening to music and that sort of thing give Linux a go. You can make a boot DVD that will run on most PCs and give you a taster. Linux actually has more users then windows these days though most are industrial rather then natively on home PCs.

I also like Solaris and it is totally free. Though can be a bit of a pain as a home OS.
