Has my engine seized :(
Was driving last night, and heard a bang from the engine, well it was more like a blow, i thought i had blown a tyre, but the car cut out. Wouldnt start, tried to turn voer engine, but when i turn key, it clicks once like it is going to start but wont.
Me and my old boy, put car in gear and managed to rock it back about 2 foot and forward about 2 foot, but it then jams and wont go any further.
Has my engine seized, great question, any help appreciated??????
also there was oil leaking from it, only know coz there was oil on the AA ramp when i got home.
Is it worth while me removing spark plugs and trying to turn it over by hand, if any1 has any suggestions, would be great
cheers

remove the spark plugs and check them for oil/debris, then remove cambelt cover and see if you still have a cambelt,
move on from your findings
sound like your cambelt has snapped or the tensioner given up, could also be piston/big end/rod failure, sure it wasnt leaking oil before or that oil is from a previous break down?

Surely the easiest way to find out is to undo the drain plug and see if any oil comes out?
If there is a minimal amount or even none then I think you have your answer...

That's probably just play in the gearbox. An good engine with good compression (which yours sounds like it doesn't have) won't move more than a foot or 2 either.
Take plugs out, in neutral and turn it by hand is best advice an take it from there.

So drain that. If about a litre comes out, then it's only the stuff that you put in that's in there...

As said above, best way to check if engine has seized is take the spark plugs out and turn it over using a socket on the end of the crank. Make sure the gears are in neutral first though!
You could try engine and gearbox together by putting it in top gear and pushing the car. Resistance to pushing is lowest in top

If you don't have cam covers then somethig might have flicked up into the belt ad caused it to jump teeth
Or as above, something in the box or clutch has blown causing it to jam

Jack the front of the car up and put something under one of the wheels (so it wont move) and spin the other wheel, if it spins then your engine is not seized and if it gets (compression) tough to turn every now and then then your valves should be okay too. also the other possibility of the belt skipped some teeth and what you heard was something like valve damage as said above. good luck

cheers
cheers for all your replies, took rocker cover off, had a play about, think its the bottom end thats away, as car wont start even with clutch pressed to floor. im guessing if it was the gearbox then it would still start if the clutch was in.
Think i might just need to sell it on, how much do you think i could get for it as a non-runner.?

Have you tried turning the engine by hand to see if there is compression? get a compression tester too

Saxo vtr, Black, angel eyes, slight tints, induction kit, twin duplex powerflow exhaust, standard interior, lowered at front, dtm mirrors, drilled and grooved front and back disks. Saxo vtr wheels.Piper cam vernier pulley. aftermarket cams.
Mot till september, taxed till end of june
i took plugs out and turned by hand, , with belt off top end turns fine, but with belt on gets so far and jams.
might take the head off this weekend and check the damage, dont know if i can just buy a bottom end from scrappies or whatever?
