Tappet adjustment?
Could someone tell me how to adjust the tappets on my mk2 vtr, 02 plate. I know i need a feeler gauge, but what are the figures to adjust them to and how do I do it? thanks

The figures in the Haynes manual are apprently to adjust the inlet valves to 0.2 and the exhaust valves to 0.4 when the engine is stone cold.
This however made my engine still sound tappety so I read a post on here saying GMC motorsport recommend adjusting them to 0.2 inlet and 0.3 exhaust when warm, which has quitened them down by a fair bit, so bare that in mind when you adjust them.
As for how to do it mate have a search theres quite a few guides on here

Ah thanks, I'll try adjusting them warm then I don't think they are too loud but im just going round everything on the engine at the moment to try and get it sounding a bit healthier, just given it a service which has helped a bit but its still not right. Also got someting rattling in the inlet manifold any ideas on that? cheers

Maybe try adjusting them 0.4 0.2 cold mate, as in leave it overnight to get it cold enough, then take it for a spin and if its not quiet, especially once its warmed up...go re adjust them
As for the inlet manifold...I thought I heard something rattling in mine, only very slightly though but I thought it was me until you mentioned it, I might try diagnose soon lol.

id reckon if u do 0.2 / 0.3 warm it will be too close together i.e could possibly were down the cam shaft? could be wrong but i also mentioned it to mate of mine and he thinks it would do the same as there too close together.

Apparently GMC motorsport recommend it mate, if there still ticking at 0.2 0.4 cold they obviously can't be right. :/

Who said GMC recommend it? Well there never going to be silent mate, vtr's have noisey injectors could also be that people are hearing. 0.2 / 0.3 just seem too close together to me.

Search about I read it on a post, thats what made me try it as I was sick of them being noisey
If you think about it 0.2 0.4 is the spec when cold.
0.2 0.3 is what I said to adjust when the engine is red hot, so if you think about it the inlet side stays the same as obviously that doesn't get very hot whereas the exhaust valves are being set at 0.3 to compensate for the metal expanding when hot. A difference of 0.1mm is extremely small and probably not far off what they will be after adjusting to 0.4 cold and then the engine heating up as the exhaust side will be extremely hot.
As for them never being silent and the possibility of it being injectors, like I say I adjusted mine to 0.2 0.4 cold and could still hear the tappets ticking, I tried again making the gaps between the feeler guages tight which still ticked, I therefore took the car for a drive getting it nice and warm and set them to 0.2 and a generous 0.3 which has quietened it down a lot, there is ever so slight noise but nothing which sounds like a bag of spanners, therefore I'd say it wasn't the injectors either.
Its entirely upto you if you try it isn't it mate, bikekid on here says hes adjusted his well below spec and had no problems, although to be on the safe side i only adjusted them ever so slightly tighter.
EDIT: This wasnt the topic I found before but again they say this is GMCs advice:

I wouldn't bother getting tappet adjustment happy, everyone knows peugeot/citroen single cam engines are tappy, get too happy and your engine can run crap, loose power and all... just set them too what Autodata says '0.2 & 0.4', maybe think about changing the grade of your oil if you want to quieten them down some more..

It seems to be different for earch individual car, i changed my oil to 5w40 before doing anything which is meant to be the best and it still did it, at 0.2 0.3 like I say they seem a lot better, and my engine runs fine and pulls perfectly well :/
