Challenge for all you photographers
Post your own version of the Andromeda galaxy, taken by yourself, as shown by Brian Cox at 25:00 into this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj5yK...bedded#at=3230
Off you pop (need a clear night sky though)
If you have Android on your phone, get the free app "Google Sky Map" to help you locate the constellation in which it lies
Would love to see if its possible for a simpleton like me to do lol!!!

I cant imagine that being too hard, assuming you have a lens with enough zoom, and can locate the galaxy. Amazing though!

Tried and failed.
I got some stuff of M42 (the Orion Nebula) a few months ago but it was literally a few pixels across. But to do it properly you need a lens in excess of 400 mm really which is a bummer. One problem though... Photographing the Andromeda galaxy is nigh on impossible in summer - winter it's much higher up and therefore easier to shoot.
Mike if you want a go get yourself Deep Sky Stacker (it's free) and then set the camera up on a tripod, with a wide angle and take a few shots off the sky - bang it through DSS and you'll get an awesome shot of the Milky Way
I'll try and dig out the M42 shot...

I've just purchased a 2x teleconvertor, so I might give this a go. I'll try and get some snaps of the moon tonight and see how shit the quality is first.

The ring was actually there and not just a lens error or something.
Was pure black in the ring, no stars etc.

Forgot about this!
Managed to get this one handheld, on quite high ISO though (I think).
Now to try and aim at the galaxies.

That's the gps tracker isn't it dude? Is it reliable/accurate enough for astrolong exposures.
Dadsayer and I were looking at one of the celestrons which had the tracker and we couldn't tell if it would be reliable or not so didn't commit.
Hope you're well!

Not GPS as such, it's done off all the stars in the sky: http://www.celestron.com/c3/page.php?PageID=433
Just been out again, Jupiter again tonight. I think the night sky is a little too polluted with light round here to get Andromeda galaxy!
