If i was in your position, i would stay away from canon/nikon cameras unless you are willing to pay alot more money for a camera, with canon there cheaper cameras are not the best camera for there money, i would recomend having a look at a few sony cameras.
i would recommend a sony a580 or maybe a sony a55
my first camera was a canon 500d and i was abit let down by it the lens are so expensive and the quality of the pictures are nothing on sony.
also i would just advise you to shop around, jessops can be extremly expensive
try
Parkcameras
warehouseexpress
hope this helps

Theyre the two biggest brands and thus have the best used markets in terms of buying and selling..
The market for used sony/minolta/olympus is terrible.

Trust me dont follow the big brand unless you are going to buy a high spec models e.g. 40/50d or 5d etc
because they arnt up to the same spec as some of the other models,
definatly have a look around for other cameras,
if you try different review sites ... photographyblog etc where they try the cameras to there limits you will be surprised.
used market for cameras i wouldnt even bother with definatly buy brand new.
if you are going to get a canon 550d the only way to use the camera to its full potental is to buy the top of the range lens, which will set you back by alot.
but it depends on how much you want to spend on the camera

When you buy a camera you buy into a system. The canon and nikon systems are a much better system to buy into than any other brand. Therefore there is no point buying into one system which is limited in relation to others on the market.
Sorry but ignoring the used market is silly, especially for beginners, people can pick up respectable glass and bodies from people trading up.
You dont need to slam L glass onto a 550D thats for sure especially when learning and im someone who doesnt use cheap glass on any of my bodies these days. The 40/50D isnt a high spec model. Its one of the consumer bodies with a bit better build than the plastic bodies. If someone does decide to buy good glass for the canon system, they are not limited for when they decide to upgrade. L glass for example on the used market barely looses much money, the stuff for other brands no one wants.

spose each to there own mate
i dont have a very big budget for decent lenses the most im gonna spend on a lens would be around £300
im just saying the underrated models are by far better in some aspects,
if you look at the specs of say a 60d and a sony a580 (market equivalent)
the a580 is alot better and the quality of the kit lens over powers the 60d, if you buy a decent lens for that 60d it will cane the a580, it all depend on the budget
the way i see it, is people are blinkered into thinking that canon and nikon are the best when actually them people are just folowing the crowd like sheep.
the low end budget cameras from cannon and nikon are rubbish and there are alot better on the market for your money.
what equiptment do you use?

I shoot on a 1d mkiii/1dmkiin and a 30D for my fisheye. + 16-35/24-70/70-200 2.8 L's.
The system is the key thing, and upgrading. The other systems are poor long term, with limited ranges of glass (ignoring the old pentax glass if you wont go used).
When you invest into a load of glass you want to have a system that works best long term, has a good used market (for when you sell to upgrade) etc... Nikon and canon are the only two that tick the boxes here. I shoot canon and I also recommend nikon so its not just saying to get what i use. The fact is if you have a lens/body from canon or nikon and someones wanting to upgrade you have a much better market to sell to. In other words no fucker wants to buy old sony/olympus stuff lol.

wow pro equiptent! do you have a website or photostream or anything? i would be interested
yea i see where your coming from. but a good camera is for long term.
i had a canon 500d and i sold it with in 2 months got a good price for it but i just hated it, i was looking at my photos and just not feeling satisfied.
another thing is there are so many sony/olympus no one really knows whats what other than a sony a55 which has been heavily advertised and is overpriced.
even so you can get some pretty beasty lenses for sony
(sony carl zeiss) i would love one of them
im quite a fan of manual photography.
using 50mm prime lens and 28mm i think they deliver the best quality and satisfaction, knowing you have took that picture not some autofocus!

Site isnt live still just the fan page - www.facebook.com/ryandinhamphotographer
I shoot music, music and more music lol..
You are moaning about prices then talk about the zeiss stuff, still buy one and then sell it, you will loose more than you do with L glass.
As i keep saying its the system not just the body. The glass is important, and here canon and nikon are the big big winners. Especially when you also consider the range from 3rd party manufacturers like sigma.
Bodies are out of date year in year out, so its much more sensible to have the money invested in good glass, and upgrade the body intermitantly.

you are totally right about selling it.
but what im saying is a camera is not something you need to sell althe time, you should normally run it into the ground. unless you have choosen the wrong one, :|

I saw from the HDR comment you do alot of insect stuff. A few threads on here from guys do bits like that. Never done any macro stuff myself as its not my thing/my kit isnt really spec'd to do so.
If you were canon you would have plenty of L for sale on forums haha!!
As for colours and spec, I actually wish these days I was shooting with some D3x's
