Default whirring noise on cold startup

i get a whirring noise when i rev the engine on a cold startup. The colder the weather the worse and louder the whirring. Once i've set off and got to the bottom of the road it stops. I think it is coming from around the alternator area.
What's the score? Alternator shafted?

Is your belt tight? Has the adjuster slipped? If the alternator was fucked it would struggle to start or not start at all, or while driving your battery light would flash.

will have a look.

Na everything starts first time without a problem. I was think the bearings in the alternator might be shite.

your alternator belt may be getting brittle and stiff causing the whirring noise, once you get to the end of the road its warmed up and become more supple so the noise stops
