I got a Canon 1100D. Was after the 550D but forgot about the memory card cost, insurance cost, and cary bag thing etc. Came to just under £550 for the camera, one lense, 4gb car, bag and lense cover or something oh and insurance.
Only difference I will be able to tell being an amatuer is the video capability. 550D has full 1080i HD, my 1100D has 720p. Will be adequate though.

Danny lens you tard!
Buy the best you can afford, the 1100d is the bottom of the pile, pretty small so not great if you have big hands.
Go to a shop see what feels the best to hold in your budget.
Then www.camerapricebuster.co.uk for body+ lens.
7day shop.com for consumable a like memory cards.

FF is the best in the digital era, only reason I don't use it is the af system on the 5d is shite compared to my 1 series and I can't justify buying a 1ds.
5d mkiii rumours getting stronger though, and unless you want the hd video and better iso performance Of the mkii, the 5d mki(3200 iso) is still ace it may be worth getting a used 5d and some tasty primes.....
L glass is great, mine takes alot of shit whch I know cheap glass couldn't take, but some of the high end sigma stuff is also lovely, I've got a 300 2.8 and fisheye of theirs.
All horses for courses n all...

for what id use it for these days, i couldnt justify buying a new one. unless my old boss will give me discount! and id be going 2nd hand.
imo the 5D raised the bar - and aswell as canon have progressed since - i wouldnt use anything else to its full potential.
im not interested in having 90Mp an ISO of 65 million billion,10fps and video capabilities to film the next tim burton movie. i wont use it, i dont want it.
a well built, great performing body with a decent supply of glass will do me well!
as for sigma - thats the only other 3rd party id recommend, i had their 12-24 but sold it to find college fees and insurance. biggest mistake of my life.
ill find a suitable kit, i just dont like Ebay much!

Doesn't matter if you're an amateur, the size issue is a pain espec if you hang big glass off of it.
I used an old 1000d felt like I'd picked up something from fisher price, all about having what fits your palms right init.

Nope, I try and recommend shot to help people.
Hence the links to where to get the better deals and sometimes get the better kit for the same price as lower stuff on the high street.
The camera is an extension of your arm, if it's uncomfortable to hold the camera you won't want to use it as much which isn't good. That's why I don't tell people they must buy a canon as ultimately the nikon system may feel better to them (I just can't recommend glass and cameras from noink as I don't use them and thus have mo idea)
