N/S Driveshaft / Offside Wheel Bearing

Hi,

I've had for a while now a humming noise while driving and a hell of a lot of knocking while going over cobbles.

I took my car reluctantly to kwik fit.. just so i could be shown the problem. The problem found my n/s driveshaft is popping itself out and back in which is the cause of the horrendous knocking. It's also quite clear my offside wheel bearing is gone when he spun the wheel you could hear it.

I also asked him to look at my brakes to see what condition they are in.. it looks like my offside rear disc doesnt even work at all but he came up with the idea that all my breaks needed replacing.. apparently.

I ignored his advice on the brakes and asked him to tell me how much they would cost, he quoted.... £971 for the driveshaft wheel bearing and brakes, good ole kwik fit prices.

I have been to two other garages to see about the driveshaft and wheel bearing and have managed to get them down from £190 each to about £135/140 each.

Basically my question was does anybody know how much theese should really cost to get done as im sure the price is still fairly high? and for a 51 plate saxo with 90k miles i didn't want to spend stupid money.

Sorry for the essay just wanted a rant about kwik fit.

Driveshaft = 50 quid
Wheel bearing = 30 quid
Brakes = 55 quid

Driveshaft varies between £44 and £130 so shop around (price difference from euro/all parts/random

I paid £20 for my oem wheel bearing.

Brakes are around £55

Thanks for the help. I suppose its the labour you pay for really i just can't bring myself to pay that much for such an old car especially when i might be getting something else in feb.
