I had a newmans PH3 cam in mine. Really good cam, not too expensive, and made the car quicker!
Also had a nice purposeful idle to it
Definitely recommended... but don't count on passing an MOT with it.
Mine was a 2003 car, and failed on emissions, even after putting two catalytic converters on it! Took the cam out and it flew through...
But, if you know a friendly garage, go for it!

XSi/Rallye head and the associated J cam gets my vote as its cheap and the head flows better than a standard VTR one. Mines a full Xsi 1.6 engine with higher compression pistons and sounds like this:

I'm guessing if it's a Mk2 with a VTR engine the xsi/rallye head won't fit will it?
Not too sure, but aren't there issues there?

Depends on the year, Later mk2s had different port spacings so the head will fit but your inlet manifold wont and so on so it'll make it a bit more of a pain in the ass. Earlier silvertops had the same port spacings as the black tops so its just fine to drop the head on. Im not too up on the aluminium block engines used in the furios but the 106 quiksilver owners swap rallye heads on a lot so can only assume its the same, unless they use an older inlet manifold and wiring?

I think the bottom ends are the same on all years, so i guess the head will physically fit.
There's probably a bit of messing about with some of the sensors and electrics though...
Rallye head and inlet manifold would be pretty ace on a VTR engine

Id like a rallye inlet but cant warrant the cost at the moment for probably a very minimal gain plus all the idle issues etc

Oh look what i found Clicky
Bearing in mind a PH3 cam will cost you nearly 200 quid...
They're pretty hard to get hold of as well aren't they the rallye inlets?
I was looking at getting one, but then i realised it wouldn't fit my engine....

Dont.
Take the engine out and add a 16v before looking at performance mods. Any gains will then be much better

Thats good advice but the 8v can give good gains, granted not as much as a 16v but are cheap to do hence my reasoning for using a rallye/xsi head. Plus I think insurance may be an issue here considering its a furio

Fair point
But technically having a vtr or vts engine in a furio means void insurance anyway?
Yeah the vtr engine looks the same but there both somewhere they shouldnt be lol
I used to own a 16v vtr that insurance knew nothing about. Id recommend doing the same but i know what the general population on here think of it.....
16v ftw

I think he wants to put the cam in a furio or put a head on it but either way insurance will be increased. What are peoples views on the 1.4s with a cam/head work? I mean the 1400 8v xsis made 103 bhp. I know the 1400 xsi has a different cam and head to a TU5J2 rallye/xsi but I assume they use a better map and higher compression just like the bigger 1600s/rallyes too? Be interesting to know as as they are a lot cheaper to tax than a 1600!

Fixed the link above^^
Another thing to bear in mind... and the main reason i went for a cam rather than 16V is the work involved. Changing a camshaft is two days work max, and unless you really badly mess things up, it will start and run fine first time.
However, an engine conversion is full of potential pitfalls, and there's no guarantee when you put it all together it will even start, let alone run right. I've had experience of both... and i know which job i'd rather do
It would be easier/cheaper/better to just sell and buy a VTS if you want a 16v.
But if you still want a smooth torque curve, with good fuel economy, and around 120bhp... then the PH3 has to be the way to go

You get the 1.3 rallye guys putting 1.6 bottom ends on though...
I think it's mainly the head isn't it?
pfft... save your cash and save towards a car that came with more power out the factory tbh. Modifying makes no sense
I poured thousands into my saxo... and sold it for 200 quid less than what i bought it for. Only had it a year, and must have spent about 3/4 grand on it.

Yeah but its fun isn't and you learn! I think i've probably spent more than that on mine not including the car but thats it you'll never get your money back with cars, unless its a collectors piece.
But anyway you made 120 bhp on an otherwise lightly modded VTR (exhaust etc) using standard injection/no remaps? What are the specs of the ph3 cam, as Ive been told the rallye J is 270 degree with 9mm of lift so would like to compare?

Urm... it will be this one. It'll be much less wild due to it being a roller rocker engine.
I had a 4-2-1, magnex and raceland induction. Couldn't really have done much more without going silly I loved that car... it was so much fun.
I think for my next car i'm going to get insurance that doesn't let me mod... maybe that'll help me keep my money in the bank

Did you have it on a dyno to get the 120 bhp figure?
