Default Main headlights dies

Hi, can anyone help..... i was driving along last night and got a burning smell as i pulled up in pertol station turned off the engine and then turned it back on the main headligths would not work. The full beam works if you hold it on, sidelights work, indicators work, dashboard lights work... etc. Has anyone got any ideas??

Possibly a wiring fault?

I'd be checking the fuse first, replace it. if it blows straight away then you need to start tracing wiring. It is rare but not unheard of for wiring to chafe on body parts and short out.

What bulbs have you got? Ifs aftermarket ones then they could be burning the plastic surround where they connect together. I had same problem on mine

are your headlights misted/damp on the inside?

this happen on my focus so i replaced the bulbs and silcone sealed the bitch

Check the plugs for the lamps.

They can melt.

Think I read something about this on Passats before, although I may be wrong, and it was a sticky ignition barrel... Basically the key wasn't clicking all the way back to the second position and was still engaging the starter, and although it let all the other things work, it didn't let the main headlights work. Maybe that's the issue?
