Default Dilemma! Ahhhggghh

Just a bit of advice as I've never been in this situation.
I've seen a car I want but it has no tax but a few month left on the mot. How do I tax it or get it home? The guy who's car it is can't tax it as he's garaged it and it isn't insured. He seems pretty genuine or is this some sort of scam? Any help would be great.

What you do is you get yourself insured on the car, print off the cover letter, and then ask him to give you a lift to the post office to get a tax disc for the car as part of the deal. It'd be easier if you view it and lay a deposit before you pick the car up as you will have more time, but it can still be easily done if you plan to drive it away on your first viewing.

Insure it or find someone with a traders policy to tax it for you

Thanks for that. If only it was closer I wouldn't be worried, it's a 2 hour drive from me. But from what I've spoke to him about it seems good. An 2002 vts in Icelandic grey, cambelt and clutch done, and in excellent nick completely standard.

Trailer or taxing on the day are your only options unfortunately. Problem is if you go there then insure it if you want it your gonna struggle to print a cover letter for the post office unless you can borrow the blokes computer lol.

Would you be able to show the cover letter to the person at the post office via a smart phone? Or would it have to be a hard copy? The cover letter will arrive in your email instantly if you request that it does so, I had to this when I insured and taxed my Saxo because I planned on driving it straight away, only difference for me was that the post office is a 5 minute walk.

I got up at 5am and drove to Worthing a 3 hours 22 mins 182 miles each way where there was a car untaxed. I was happy with the car, I phoned up the insurance and took out insurance and within 10minutes my certificate had been emailed through, I printed this out at the guys house and he gave me a lift to the post office where I taxed it, then drove home fully legal, got home for half 1ish and then to work for my 8 hours shift at half 2

I also did this with my current car but that was only a 50minutes drive to Birmingham and again printed it out at th guys house and nipped to the post office to tax it.

2 hours isn't too far to drive tbf. I've drove 166 miles round trip to view a car today, I'm going back next Sunday to pick it up. 300 miles in total so about £80 in fuel but its not the end of the world.

I know it's not to far, just work a lot of stupid hours and the free time I do escape work I'm with the little lad. And 10 mins in a car for him is the equivilant of years! Ha ha. I'm going to try and finish a bit earlier and sneak on. My only other issue is having a test drive, which I won't be able to do with no tax. And aparantly this vts has only done 60,000. But he says he's got paperwork to back it up to be fair. (I'm a very suspicious person)

I tried this but he says its locked in his garage uninsured and the mot runs out in July. So he can't. That's another reason that puts me off as I'd keep it insured. But I suppose not everyone's the same.
