Respray - by can? - Saxperience

Anyone got any advice when it comes to respraying by spray can?
No experience in anything of the sort (no experience in cars at all) but willing to give it a go. Is it going to be more of a pain than I'm expecting?

Respray what? An entire car?

Personally, my advice would be......... Don't.

With no experience of painting or cars, it'll likely end in a waste of time effort and money and with a car which will look horrendous.

If you're dead set on the idea - find something smaller to at least practice on to get a feel for it.

Too cold this time of year.
Paint is softer than real paint.
It will not be a even coverage.
Will be loads of different colours.
Will also take a hell of a long time.

So my advice is just don't.

I can paint a full car inside and out in 2 hours. Prep work for a full respray can take 1-2 weeks. There is no point in taking that long to prep a car just to put some cheap paint on it, it won't last and will look crap.

As above dont bother.

If it is metallic get a professional to do it. If a flat paint it can be done in small panels but it wont look the same and you'll get runs and blemishes all over it.

If you have an indoor garage it can be possible with the heater on warming the metal up but it'll take ages to warm metal in this current environment, not to mention the damp in the air.

If outside, just forget it.

Apparently prickle that used to be on here has got a full time job painting cars at a Ferrari garage so you'll be fine mate

Don't even bother spray cans are shit and the paint is soft, you can do an alright job at home if you get some proper equipment ( air compressor, spray guns etc ) but its not gonna be cheap and you also then have the worry of the dangers of spraying 2K.. in short its not worth bothering unless you've got a few grand going spare for all the stuff you need in which case you could afford a professional respray anyways.

Thanks guys. I think I deep down expected the answers to be what they are, and was probably hoping for a quick easy to learn DIY method, foolishly I know haha.

The paint work isnt too bad as it is, just wondered if it'd be worth it to give it a nice fresh look, but maybe a bit more TLC with the polish would be suitable for now. If I've got the cash during the summer I'll rethink about it then.

Ah this goes to show how little I know about looking after a car haha. Didn't even know that was a thing. It is considered expensive? And would you recommend it be done in warmer weather? Also would it be worth getting it 'mopped' at the same time as having the dings looked at, or would they be done by different professionals generally?
